Rehab News: Charity calls for action on alcohol-related liver disease

More than 100 people are admitted to hospital with alcohol-related liver disease every day, new figures have shown.

The British Liver Trust said that the figures, released last week by the Information Centre, are alarming and called for urgent action from the drinks industry, supermarkets and off-licences to help inform consumers of the risks of excess drinking.

Chief executive Alison Rogers said that four people are admitted every hour as a result of alcoholic liver disease.

"The fact that alcohol-related admissions in England have gone up by over 50 per cent since 1995/96 should be a matter of great alarm," she said.

Ms Rogers noted that people are "paying with their lives" because of a combination of cheap, accessible alcohol and the UK's "anytime anywhere anyplace" mentality.

"Individuals have to think more about their own consumption, but government should be pushing the drinks industry much harder, especially if it is relying on them to self-regulate," she claimed.

The government has recently revealed that all alcoholic drinks labels will be required to include alcohol unit information and guidelines on safe levels of consumption by the end of 2008.

The move is being taken to address the 7.1 million English people who drink more than the recommended guidelines, which suggest that men should not regularly exceed three to four units per day, while women should limit themselves to no more than two to three daily units.
