Rehab News: Moderate drinkers more likely to be healthy
A new study has found that people who drink a moderate amount of alcohol are more likely to report above-average health than other people.
Research published in the American Journal of Health Promotion found that moderate drinkers tend to be healthier than light drinkers, heavy drinkers and abstainers.
Data was taken from over 31,000 adults and, for the purposes of the study, moderate drinking was defined as four to 14 drinks per week for men and between four and seven drinks per week for women.
Study coauthor Dr Michael French, professor of health economics at the University of Miami, commented: "Our results suggest that a moderate amount of drinking is not necessarily dangerous for most people and may actually be health-enhancing."
However, the researchers note that this trend is probably due to moderate drinkers simply leading healthier lifestyles in general, rather than the drinking itself contributing to better health.
Dr Arthur Klatsky, cardiology consultant at the Kaiser Permanente Medical Care Programme in California, explained: "By and large, the same people that work out and eat healthy are probably more likely to be moderate drinkers instead of heavier drinkers."
The researchers also reiterated that heavy drinking contributes to poor health.
