Rehab News: Police chief calls for new drinking laws

The prime minister has been urged to consider raising the age at which people can buy alcohol from off-licenses to 21.

Merseyside chief constable Bernard Hogan-Howe has issued the call amid concerns over the increase of alcohol-related violence.

According to the chief constable, Merseyside Police receives 250,000 calls for help every year from victims of anti-social behaviour.

The chief constable said: "My suggestions are to restrict the sale of alcohol to young people through off-licences and to come down hard on adults who go into off-licences to buy alcohol and hand it over to youngsters in the street."

Mr Hogan-Howe revealed that, in his letter to Gordon Brown, he has also suggested reducing the points of sale, increasing prices, and only allowing home deliveries during the day.

"With the medical profession alerting us to the high level of chronic liver disease in the young, we need to do something," he insisted.
