Rehab News: 'Alcohol Court' to provide support for recovering parents
Three London councils are aiming to give enhanced support to recovering alcoholics and their families by setting up the UK's first Family Drug and Alcohol Court.
In an attempt to enable more children in care to return home, the court will decide whether parents who are recovering alcoholics should be afforded extra support and alcohol treatment to help them keep their children, or whether the children would be better off elsewhere.
It has been set up by Westminster, Islington and Camden councils, will sit at the Inner London Family Proceedings Court and is based on a similar model developed in the US which has proved effective at keeping children with their parents after they have received the requisite support.
According to Judge Nick Crichton, the success of the model in the US means it's "worth trying in the UK".
"For too many years I have seen children, sometimes the fifth, sixth or seventh from the same family, being taken into care because of parental misuse of alcohol and/or drugs," he commented.
"This is not beneficial for the children and is expensive for the taxpayer."
Support available to families through the court includes therapists, mentors and specialist clinical staff.
