Rehab News: Marks & Spencer lower alcohol wines aim to help drinkers stick within limits

Food retailer Marks and Spencer has announced plans to launch a range of low-alcohol wines in order to help people drink within recommended limits.

The three M&S L%wer Alcohol wines, a red, white and rose, will be sold in 500ml bottles containing five units of alcohol.

The wines are made using conventional wine-making techniques to achieve a naturally lower-alcohol content of 9.5 per cent alcohol-by-volume.

Marks and Spencer said the lower alcohol volume and smaller bottles will allow two people to share a bottle and still stay within the government's sensible daily drinking recommendations, of no more than two to three units for women and three to four units for men.

The labels will also feature information on safe alcohol levels.

M&S winemaker Jo Ahearne told Talking Retailer: "We are committed to responding to our customers' needs. The new wines offer clarification and guidance, and not only are they lower in alcohol, but they also offer all of the quality and flavour expected of an M&S wine."
