Rehab News: Abuse often at root of female alcoholism

Therapists who are treating female alcoholics may need to treat the damage associated with physical and mental abuse, experts have said.

Medical professionals and therapists often find that women seeking alcohol treatment have failed to come to terms with experiences in their past, such as domestic abuse or depression.

Barbara Ramlow, director of the targeted assessment programme at the Centre on Drug and Alcohol Research at the University of Kentucky, told the Lexington Herald-Leader: "When you are dealing with women who are addicted, it's typical to see issues of sexual abuse, lack of education, poverty, lack of parenting skills, the presence of children."

Ms Ramlow said that withdrawal of alcohol can cause these old problems to rise up and the patients can become "overwhelmed", making it all the more important the therapist makes a point of treating their original grief or trauma.

Experts also note that one of the common methods used to start alcoholics on the road to recovery, which requires addicts to admit they are powerless over alcohol, may be counterproductive in women with a history of emotional trauma.

TK Logan, a researcher in the university's Centre on Drug and Alcohol Research, explained: "If you've been in a domestic violence situation where you've surrendered all your control and power…[and] they are telling you to surrender your power, that can be tough."
