Rehab News: Alcohol-related emergencies treble

The number of alcohol-related visits to one overnight emergency care centre has trebled since the UK's licensing laws were changed.

A study published in Emergency Medicine Journal reveals that, since the laws were changed in November 2005 to allow 24-hour alcohol sales, night-time visits to the emergency department at St Thomas' Hospital have greatly increased.

Researchers analysed emergency care visits to the inner-city teaching hospital during March 2005 - before the law was changed - and in March 2006, following the introduction of the new legislation.

They found that the number of overall visits fell by three per cent, but the number of overnight visits increased from 2,700 in March 2005 to 3,100 in March 2006.

The proportion of visits which were alcohol-related trebled from just under three per cent to eight per cent, with the number of visits resulting from alcohol-related assault doubling.

The study authors said: "We feel that our findings are likely to be representative of inner city [emergency care departments] in the UK.

"If reproduced over longer time periods and across the UK as a whole, the additional numbers of patients presenting to [emergency care] with alcohol related problems could be very substantial," they added.

Shadow health secretary Andrew Lansley said that the findings were "deeply worrying".

"If this increase in alcohol-related admissions was to reflect the whole of the UK then the cost to the NHS would be massive at a time when Labour's public health policy is failing to tackle the problem of binge drinking."
