Rehab News: Alcohol awareness 'GCSE' gets underway

GCSEs which help teenagers learn how to drink sensibly are set to be made available as part of a new alcohol awareness certificate.

Devised by the BII, the professional body in charge of the licensed retail sector, the course is designed to help give teenagers knowledge about alcohol and is worth half of a GCSE, or NVQ level 1, having been accredited by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority.

Potential health issues, legal penalties for buying and selling alcohol and other implications of alcohol abuse are all dealt with on the course, which even provides guidance on what to do if people think a friend or family member needs alcohol treatment and how to spot alcoholism symptoms.

John McNamara, BII chief executive, said the scheme was "developed in response to governmental pressure on underage sales and consumption but tackles the topic from a positive, educational angle."

The ten-hour course is designed to offer a preventative approach to alcoholism, with the issue a growing problem among children in the UK.

According to recent government figures almost one in ten of all children aged between 11 and 13 are consuming more than ten units – a bottle and a half of wine or five pints - a week.
