Rehab News: Alcohol fuelling increase in cancer
Alcohol has been one of the main factors driving the increase in 'lifestyle' cancers, according to cancer research charity Cancer Research UK.
About half of all cancers could be prevented by changes in lifestyle, argued Cancer Research UK, as the incidence of lifestyle cancers has risen significantly in the past decade.
Among the lifestyle changes suggested by the charity was a moderate intake of alcohol.
"While incidence rates for some cancers have fallen over the past decade, others are rising and many of these cases could be prevented if people avoided excessive sun exposure, smoking and obesity and limited their alcohol intake," said statistical information manager at Cancer Research UK Lucy Morrish.
The charity had previously launched at 'Reduce the Risk' campaign to combat the prevalence of these lifestyle factors.
Mouth, womb and kidney cancers have grown by ten to 20 per cent in the past decade, all cancers that have lifestyle choices as risk factors.
But the fastest growing by far has been malignant melanomas, the most dangerous form of skin cancer, which has risen by 40 per cent during the same time period.
As with other lifestyle factors, Cancer Research UK recommended taking the necessary precautions, and wearing a sunscreen when possible.
