Rehab News: Alcohol related crime given treatment

A solicitor has successfully argued that alcohol-related offences should be solved by providing access to alcohol treatment, rather than imposing legal restrictions on individuals.

According to reports in the Whitehaven News, a Cumbria man risked being given an Asbo after he was found drunk in public. He had recently been released from prison having served a short sentence for shoplifting and showing a record of drink-related offences.

Solicitor Neil Pilling last month contended that as a chronic alcoholic, his client required access to treatment and that proposing an Asbo showed: "astonishing and total lack of understanding of the disease by the police", adding he needed "medical treatment, not an anti-social behaviour order. That's not going to work."

Mr Pilling's argument saw his client instead having to pay a fine, after the solicitor convinced the court that his client would be seeking the medical treatment that he needed.

In 2004, a spokeswoman for Alcohol Concern told the Guardian that the charity had concerns about Asbos being thought of as a long-term answer to alcohol-related crime.

She told the paper that there needed to be more cooperation between health services, local councils, police and the courts.

Analysis Of Alcoholics Brains Suggests Treatment Target

An analysis of brain tissue samples from chronic alcoholics reveals changes that occur at the molecular level in alcohol abuse − and suggests a potential treatment target, according to researchers from Wake Forest University School of Medicine.

The results will appear in the June issue of the journal. "We have identified a protein that may be a cause of alcohol dependence and tolerance, suggesting the possibility of developing a drug to inhibit the molecule and treat the disease," said Qiang Gu, Ph.D., senior author.

Gu and colleagues used cutting-edge technology to explore the idea that the complex behavioural, psychological, emotional and brain changes associated with alcoholism are likely due to how networks of proteins respond to chronic and excessive alcohol intake. Proteins, which are manufactured by genes, determine how an organism looks, how well its body metabolises food or fights infection, and even how it behaves.

Using a newly emerging tool to study proteins, called antibody microarray analyses, Gu and colleagues are able to measure levels of more than 500 different proteins in tissue samples. In a pilot study, they noted that beta-catenin was increased in alcoholics, so they studied it in more detail. In the current study, they evaluated levels of 17 proteins associated with the catenin signaling pathway.

He cautioned that more research is needed before scientists can use the information to develop a potential treatment. He said a next step is to study animals to determine exactly when levels of beta-catenin increase.

"This protein may play a role in the reward circuitry," said Gu. "If that is true, a drug to block these effects could reduce dependence on alcohol."

Hasselhoff supported by doctors and friends as he returns for alcohol treatment

Entertainer David Hasselhoff has returned to an alcohol treatment centre in a move that was supported by his doctors and friends.

"David had a brief relapse (of alcoholism) and immediately recognised the importance of addressing it with the assistance of his doctors. He is doing fine and will be back home in the morning," the actor's publicist Judy Katz told website TMZ.

In a message to her America's Got Talent co-judge, Sharon Osbourne said: "David, I am very proud of you for taking the first step and to have you as my friend."

His ex-wife Pamela Bach said: "I wish David the best. I just hope he gets better."

Mr Hasselhoff is famous for his roles in Knight Rider and Baywatch and has recently been filming in Europe.
