Rehab News: Alcohol treatment saves more than it costs

The cost of alcohol treatment programmes is much less than the cost of dealing with problem drinking according to research.

A study by the British Medical Journal found that for every £1 spent, £5 was saved from the cost of dealing with the consequences of problem drinking.

Two treatments were compared which both allow people to continue with their daily lives rather than staying in residential accommodation - social behaviour & network therapy and motivational enhancement therapy.

Both types of treatments were found to help cut alcohol consumption and dependency and a cost analysis concluded that the average cost of treating one person was £175.

However, it was calculated that treatment saved nearly £900 in reduced health and social care, including the impact on police and the criminal justice system.

Geethika Jayatilaka, director of policy and public affairs at Alcohol Concern told the BBC: "Every year thousands of people access help and support from specialist alcohol services and are able to turn their lives around.

"Lack of investment means that thousands of people are unable to access the help they need, putting their health at risk and adding to the burden on the rest of the NHS and the criminal justice system."
