Rehab News: Alcohol treatment strategy defended

Proposals to overhaul alcohol misuse services in Eastbourne have been defended by the area's primary care trust (PCT) after they were criticised by a local resident.

The un-named local claimed that there had been no consultation with users and questioned the new services' ability to cut waiting times.

However, Jason Mahoney, joint commissioning manager for alcohol misuse at East Sussex Downs and Weald PCT, told the Eastbourne Herald that the multi-agency Drug and Alcohol Action Team (DAAT) had maintained a dialogue with service users, providers and other stakeholders since publishing its alcohol harm reduction strategy in April 2006.

"Some people will feel comfortable accessing the help that the strategy describes, others will want to attend AA groups or will find other ways to change their alcohol use," he claimed.

Mr Mahoney said that as many as one in five people drink too much alcohol, but revealed that many manage to stop drinking without the need for specialist alcohol treatment.

"It's important to encourage a range of options as there isn't one particular approach that works for everyone," he added.

Home Office figures suggest that 8.2 million people in England drink above the recommended level.
