Rehab News: Australia tackles alcohol abuse in sport

The Australian Football League (AFL) has unveiled plans to address excessive drinking among its players, a move which has been welcomed by the Australian Drug Foundation (ADF).

A survey conducted in 2001 revealed that 34 per cent of Australians aged 14 years and over had placed themselves at short-term risk on at least one drinking occasion during the previous 12 months, and around ten per cent drink at levels which could pose long-term health risks.

The AFL has responded to a report by the University of Melbourne researcher John Fitzgerald by announcing that it will now conduct player workshops on excessive drinking before the Christmas period, rather than in February as has previously been done.

The ADF welcomed the move and said that the football league had recognised the particular "nexus" between elite sportsmen, intoxication and harm.

CEO Bill Stronach commented: "Most Australians generally drink in reasonably safe ways. But unfortunately some groups place themselves at high risk of alcohol-related harm.

"Young males are one group who perform such impressive feats on the field, then risk life and limb - literally - through unsafe exploits with alcohol."

Mr Stronach added that the ADF's Good Sports programme helps individual clubs to tackle alcohol abuse by both players and spectators.
