Rehab News: BMA report calls for government action on alcohol abuse

The British Medical Association (BMA) has published a report urging the government to take action to tackle the growing problem of alcohol abuse in the UK.

A range of legislation needs to be imposed to deal with the country's "epidemic" of alcohol misuse, according to the doctors' union.

In the report, entitled Alcohol misuse: tackling the UK epidemic, the BMA criticises the government for working too closely with the alcohol industry and pursuing policies of deregulation and liberalization.

It calls on policy-makers to implement effective "control policies" to confront the problem.

The report makes a number of recommendations including higher taxes on alcohol, an end to alcohol promotions, warning messages on alcoholic drinks and a reduction in the legal drink-driving limit.

BMA chairman of council, Dr Hamish Meldrum, said: "Our report is making some tough recommendations but if the government is serious about tackling this issue this is what is needed."

The UK has one of the highest rates of alcohol consumption in the world and figures show that alcohol abuse in the country is escalating.
