Rehab News: Charity calls for better government campaigns

Alcohol Concern has called for better government campaigns to draw attention to the impact of alcohol abuse.

Frank Soodeen, press and parliamentary officer, said that the government needs to focus more on "the growing public health crisis brought on by large numbers of people quietly doing themselves harm through drinking".

He added that with a growing ignorance of the health risks, the government needs to stop emphasising alcohol-related crime and work to "highlight the risks to long-term health that are associated with alcohol misuse".

Mr Soodeen also commented that the availability of cheap, stronger alcohol is also contributing to an increasing number of people drinking excessively.

Last week, BBC Online reported that the deputy editor of the British Medical Journal, Trish Groves, called for half-bottles of wine to be made cheaper and more available in order to cut down the amount of wine that people drink.
