Rehab News: Counsellor recommends 'gift of self awareness'

One of the best Christmas presents you could give someone with an alcohol problem this year could be the gift of self-awareness, an addictions counsellor has suggested.

According to Cathy Patterson-Sterling, programme director of a private alcohol rehabilitation centre in Canada, the festive period can be ruined for many families with alcohol abusing relatives.

She recommends confronting the problem in a caring and respectful way and helping the person to seek alcohol treatment.

"It's not about waiting until the person is drunk and grabbing the glass out of their hand at Christmastime. It's really preparing ahead of time," she told Canada.com.

"It's not funny when you're slurring your words and scaring all the kids by challenging everybody to a fight."

Ms Patterson-Sterling advises relatives to take the bull by the horns by telling the alcohol abuser that they are worried about them and preventing them from drinking when they come over for Christmas.

This, she claims, gives them the choice to either abide by the rules and abstain from drinking, or to stay away and avoid upsetting family members.

The expert notes that by confronting the problem with love, it is possible to get the person into alcohol treatment so that they can start turning their life around.

Alcohol treatment to be boosted in the north-east

Alcohol treatment services in the north-east of England are to be boosted by a new £5 million funding programme.

The Better Health, Fairer Health programme will be launched by minister for the north-east and Newcastle East and Wallsend MP Nick Brown on Friday.

Mr Brown told the Evening Chronicle: "Sadly, drink consumption has been growing and we need to reverse that.

"We need to win the hearts, minds and livers of local people. The health of people living in the north-east has been too poor for too long. We are consistently top of the health league for all the wrong reasons, partly as a legacy of heavy industry and partly because of our lifestyles.

"Within 25 years we want to improve the health of the North East from one of the poorest in the country to the best."

He added: "One of the things we will be focusing on is the growing booze and binge drinking culture."

As part of the programme an alcohol office will set up be based on the Fresh – Smoke Free North East campaign.

Commenting, Newcastle liver specialist Dr Chris Record, told the same paper: "We need a different approach as the north-east has one of the worst rates of alcohol consumption. This would be a very positive step towards addressing these issues."
