Rehab News: DIY test detects alcohol-related liver damage
Doctors have welcomed a new testing kit that will allow drinkers to tell if they have damaged their liver in the comfort of their own home.
The kit, which costs £99, enables users to take a pin-prick sample of their blood to be sent away for analysis.
The results are then returned to the person within ten days, letting them know whether they need to visit a doctor for further treatment.
Liver damage can be due to a number of causes, including alcohol abuse, hepatitis and obesity.
Dr Rajiv Jalan, a liver consultant at University College Hospital, London, told the Evening Standard: "A lot of people want to stick their head in the sand and not admit they have a problem.
"Being able to do a test at home might persuade more of them to get themselves checked out."
Dr Jalan explained that many people do not realise they have liver damage until it is quite advanced.
"It's clear many people are drinking to excess believing they can get away with it. Hopefully, by taking this test they will see the damage they are doing to their livers and stop drinking," he added.
