An alcohol treatment centre in the US is to offer patients a DNA-customised programme for individuals with a genetic predisposition for addictive behaviour.
According to the Better Tomorrow centre, it is estimated that roughly a third of the general US population is genetically predisposed to addictive behaviour, primarily because of a dysfunction involving their dopamine receptors.
"This doesn't mean they will automatically become addicts," said Charles Anderson, chief operating officer of A Better Tomorrow.
"It just means they are more susceptible to addictive behaviour than the general population. ["]
Under the treatment patients have their DNA tested first to determine if they are genetically predisposed to addictive behaviour. They then receive customised treatment formulated to meet the patient's specific needs.
