Rehab News: Doctors warned to check young patients for cocaine use

An American health agency has warned doctors to check younger patients who display symptoms of chest pain for cocaine use.

In a publication in Circulation Journal, the American Heart Association called for physicians to ensure they find out if patients who are exhibiting chest pain have used cocaine in order to make sure that suitable drugs are administered.

The report warns that exposure to cocaine can make the use of beta-blockers dangerous.

"If physicians suspect a heart attack, it’s essential to rule out cocaine use because exposure to the drug could affect what is safe and effective treatment," said Doctor James McCord.

It also draws attention to the fact that although they may exhibit signs of a heart attack, "most cocaine-associated chest pain is not a heart attack", recommending that these patients are monitored in an observation unit for up to 12 hours.

According to the report, studies have found "actual heart attack rates" of between 0.7 and 6 per cent for patients who seek emergency treatment of cocaine-associated chest pain.

Last month new research presented by scientists at Trinity College Dublin suggested that there may a biological reason why some people are more likely to become addicted to cocaine, while others can use the drug socially without becoming dependent.
