Rehab News: Drinking and eating disorders could be linked, experts suggest

Excessive drinking and eating disorders such as anorexia may often go hand in hand and - more terrifyingly - unnoticed, experts have claimed.

Alcohol dependence is often used by young woman as an appetite suppressant, or alternatively, those on weight-watching programmes may save up their points during the week in order to get drunk at weekends, the Times reports.

Chief executive of the eating-disorder charity Foundations UK Mary Wood tells the newspaper: "There are so many ways in which the two work together - psychologically, physiologically and culturally.

"One thing is certain, however: all eating disorders are a way of coping with emotional pain and so is alcohol."

Research by Columbia University in 2001, entitled Food for Thought - Substance Abuse and Eating Disorders, suggested eating disorder sufferers are at a five times greater risk of substance abuse-related illnesses, including alcoholism, the newspaper states.

Substance abusers were also found to be at an 11 times greater risk of eating disorders during the research.

The news follows the announcement that a new UK anti-drinking campaign is set to target women between the ages of 30 and 50 - often the victims of what the Times has labelled "drunkarexia".

Virtual World Therapeautic For Addicts

Patients in therapy to overcome addictions have a new arena to test their coping skills − the virtual world. A new study by University of Houston Associate Professor Patrick Bordnick found that a virtual reality (VR) environment can provide the climate necessary to spark an alcohol craving so that patients can practice how to say "no" in a realistic and safe setting.

"As a therapist, I can tell you to pretend my office is a bar, and I can ask you to close your eyes and imagine ...

the environment, but you'll know that it's not real," Bordnick said. "In this virtual environment you are at a bar or at a party or in a real-life situation. What we found was that participants had real-life responses."

Bordnick, of the UH Graduate College of Social Work, investigates virtual reality as a tool for assessing and treating addictions. He studied 40 alcohol-dependent people who were not receiving treatment (32 men and eight women). Wearing a VR helmet, each was guided through 18 minutes of virtual social environments that included drinking. The participant's drink of choice was included in each scene. Using a game pad, each rated his or her cravings and attention to the alcohol details in each room. Each then was interviewed following the experience.

"What we found was that the VR environments were real enough that their cravings were intensified. So, now we can develop coping skills, practice them in those very realistic environments until those skills are working tools for them to use in real life," Bordnick said.

"This study shows us the value of using virtual reality as a tool for assessing and treating addictions. Future studies should explore the importance of environmental settings and other cues on cravings and relapse," Bordnick said.

His study is available online in the journal Addictive Behaviors

Addiction clinic 'put my life back together', says ex-mayor

The Cuan Mhuire addiction clinic in Newry is to be closed to make way for a new motorway, to the dismay of one of its ex-patients.

Pat McGinn, a Sinn Fein councillor for Newry, has spoken out on BBC Radio Ulster's Talkback programme on how the alcohol and drug addiction centre helped him get back on track.

Speaking on the experience of being an alcoholic, he said: "My family was living with a nightmare. I was taken in here unconditionally.

"The closure of Cuan Mhuire means the chance for broken lives to be repaired has been removed by this decision," Mr McGinn added.

Dilapidated buildings and plans for a new road have caused ministers to make the decision to close the centre.

The Forum for Action on Substance Abuse's representative Hilary Campbell Martin called the decision to close Cuan Mhuire "disgraceful".

She said: "The knock-on impact from this treatment centre closing is that we are going to expect some of the brunt of that."

The Southern Health and Social Care Trust and the Southern Health and Social Services Board said that they would be providing assistance and support to those currently living at the facility.
