Rehab News: Expert calls for supermarket alcohol ban

A health adviser to the government has called for a complete ban on the selling of alcohol in supermarkets, according to the Daily Telegraph.

The paper reported that the chairman of Health England Professor Julian le Grand said that cheap alcohol in supermarkets is fuelling the drink-culture in the UK and said alcohol has become "like adult candy".

But those in the industry have refuted his claims. Andrew Opie, the director of food at the British Retail Consortium, told the paper: "This is ridiculous. No one buys alcohol accidentally. Supermarkets have the best record on preventing underage sales and are helping to drive a culture of sensible drinking."

Prof le Grand called for the introduction of "separate alcohol outlets", so that adults will not be "lured" into buying alcohol while they are completing their weekly shop.

He also criticised the ever-decreasing price of alcohol, urging a "dramatic rise" in prices to reduce the temptation to buy.

Last week Ken Jones, president of the Association of Chief Police Officers, called for immediate action to stop teenage binge drinking and criticised the ease with which youngsters can purchase alcohol over the counter.
