Rehab News: Experts say Children as young as nine must be warned of alcohol dangers
Teaching experts in Wales have called for children as young as nine to be taught about the dangers of binge drinking, reports the Western Mail.
Waiting until secondary school to educate children about the implications of drug and alcohol abuse is too late, according to teachers and union leaders.
The chief inspector of education and training in Wales, Dr Bill Maxwell, said: "Substance misuse, particularly the abuse of alcohol, is an ever increasing problem affecting young people of all ages."
Estyn, the Welsh education watchdog, has claimed that education about substance abuse has more of an impact on primary school pupils than those at secondary school.
Experts believe that children need to be taught about the dangers before they start experimenting when they change schools.
Jayne Brencher, head of personal, social and health education at Pontypridd High School, told the paper: "Kids drink because it gives them confidence to be popular members of their peer group."
She added that older children "need information about resisting peer pressure".
Prime Minister Gordon Brown this week announced plans to tackle bingedrinking among the nation's young people, including a pledge that shops caught selling alcohol to under-age drinkers more than once will lose their licence.
