Rehab News: Funds for Scotland to tackle alcohol abuse

Scotland has been allocated £25 million to fight the growing problem of alcohol abuse in the country.

The Scottish government awarded health bosses more than double the amount of cash than last year, to put towards improving screening, treatment, advice and prevention services for those with problems with alcohol.

Public Health Minister Shona Robison said: "Far too many Scots are drinking above the recommended amounts on a regular basis - often without realising that they are doing so and without understanding the impact it is having on their health," reported the Scotsman.

Greater Glasgow will be allocated the largest amount of the money with £6.3 million, as part of an £85 million package which will distributed throughout the country over the next three years.

The drive to combat alcohol abuse in Scotland has been welcomed by health experts, but the paper reported that it has been stressed that the money needs to be used wisely in order to achieve its maximum possible benefits.

Scotland's justice secretary Kenny MacAskill recently spoke out about his aim to tackle binge drinking by stopping the growing market of cheap alcohol.
