Rehab News: Gene breakthrough could lead to improved alcohol abuse treatment
A study conducted by researchers at the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) has found that the genes which play a role in illegal drug abuse are different to those which have an effect on nicotine and alcohol dependence - while the genes associated with caffeine addiction are thought to be different still.
It is hoped that this discovery can be used by researchers to enhance their efforts to use genetic tools to localise genes that are a factor in drug abuse or dependence (A/D), which could ultimately lead to more effective treatment.
"We wanted to know whether there was a single set of genes that influence risk for A/D on all substances," explained Kenneth S Kendler, a professor of psychiatry and human genetics in VCU's School of Medicine and lead author on the study.
"Our findings suggested two genetic factors - one which strongly impacted on risk for A/D of illicit drugs, such as cannabis and cocaine, and one that impacted on risk for A/D of licit drugs, including caffeine, nicotine and alcohol.
"However, these two factors were rather strongly correlated," he added.
The results appear in the November issue of the Archives of General Psychiatry, a journal of the American Medical Association.
