Rehab News: Gene variant may affect alcohol treatment outcome

A new study by experts at the Universities of Connecticut and New Mexico indicates that the GABRA2 genotype - DNA sequence variations of which have been linked to alcoholism - may modify drinking behaviour and affect the outcome of certain types of alcohol treatment.

Between 52 and 64 per cent of cases of alcohol dependence are thought to be due to genetic factors and previous research has shown that a high-risk GABRA2 allele is associated with a "blunted subjective response" to alcohol, according to Henry Kranzler, professor of psychiatry at the University of Connecticut Health Centre.

"We considered that this allele might predict drinking behaviour in alcoholics in treatment, so we designed a study to identify patient predictors of treatment response to specific psychotherapies that were clearly differentiated," the professor explained.

Researchers collected DNA samples from 812 people (including 596 men and 216 women) and followed them through 12 weeks of alcohol treatment and a further 12-month follow-up.

Publishing their findings in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research, they reveal that the GABRA2 genotype can modify overall alcohol intake and affect the success of treatment.

Kent Hutchison, a professor at the University of Mexico, commented: "It may be too soon to know exactly how these findings may be used in the clinic as there is much work to be done.

"But certainly, this is a first step in the right direction and at some point there is likely to be implications for how we match patients to specific treatments."
