Rehab News: Government to fund counselling for binge-drinkers
The government is to fund alcoholism counselling for people arrested for alcohol-related offences, it has emerged.
Home secretary Jacqui Smith revealed that Drug and Alcohol Action Teams in Manchester, Liverpool, Cheshire and Ealing have been provided with £330,000 to fund a pilot project.
The trial Alcohol Arrest Referral Projects will require police to judge whether a person who has been arrested may benefit from advice about safer drinking.
A resident alcohol specialist will then provide advice about safe levels of alcohol consumption, as well as information on the effect of alcohol on the body and ways to reduce their risk of offending.
In addition, those people judged to have more complex alcohol misuse problems may be given a conditional caution and referred to more in-depth alcohol treatment, rather than being prosecuted for their offence.
Srabani Sen, chief executive of Alcohol Concern, said: "It is not enough to just punish those who commit such crimes. We need actively to work with people to change the drinking patterns that lead to trouble.
"Providing people with active, personalised advice about their drinking promises good results in breaking the link between alcohol and violent crime. We applaud the government for this initiative."
