Rehab News: Internet provides weapon against alcohol abuse

Campaigners are hoping that the internet site YouTube may prove to be a potent weapon in the fight against alcohol abuse.

A new advertising campaign has been launched across the Forth Valley to coincide with Scotland's first Alcohol Awareness Week.

The campaign has been inspired by the video-sharing site and includes posters on buses bearing the message: "You Tube! Don't be Next," as well as numbers to call for alcohol treatment and advice.

Fiona Mackenzie, chief executive of NHS Forth Valley, said that parents can play a "vital role" in educating youngsters about the dangers of binge drinking.

Ms Mackenzie, who chairs the area's substance action team, told the BBC: "It may appear glamorous for youngsters to drink heavily, especially when amongst friends, but to be under the influence is far from glamorous.

"We need to encourage people to drink sensibly and be aware of what damage too much alcohol can cause."

The campaign will run until the New Year.

Does gene variant make women more prone to alcoholism

A particular gene variant might make women more susceptible to alcoholism. At least, a study carried out by the Universities of Bonn and Sweden's Karolinska Institute makes this a plausible conclusion. According to this study, a gene in the endorphin metabolism is altered in a typical fashion more often in women alcoholics than in healthy women. In mice too, endorphins seem to play an important role in the amount of alcohol consumed, particularly among females.

as 'happiness' hormones. They activate what is known as the reward system in the brain and thereby ensure a good mood. This could be the case after jogging (experts talk about 'Runner's High'), after a bar of chocolate or also after a glass of beer or wine. The body endeavours to repeat this high, in the worst case ending in addiction.

Without these 'happiness' hormones you should be going easy on the alcohol, the theory also says. Researchers have tested this hypothesis. For this they examined mice that could not produce any endorphins due to a genetic mutation. The laboratory mice had the choice of quenching their thirst with pure water or an ethanol solution. 'Overall, mice without endorphins drank less alcohol than their relatives with endorphins,' Dr. Ildika Raicz from the Bonn Institute of Molecular Psychiatry explains. She led the study together with her colleague Britta Schalrmann and the director of the institute, Professor Dr. Andreas Zimmer.

The endorphin effect was particularly marked in female mice. Normally these tend to hit the bottle more than males. 'But without endorphins, the decrease in their desire for alcohol was particularly drastic.' Dr Raicz adds. By contrast, in males the absence of the endorphins made less difference.

Then the scientists scrutinised genes which are important in the human endorphin metabolism. For this they analysed blood samples of just short of a total of 500 female and male alcoholics for peculiarities. 'We were able to show that two genetic changes in the genes of female alcoholics occurred significantly more frequently than in healthy women,' Dr Raicz said.

'We don't know what the exact effect of these changes is.' By contrast, the scientists did not find any changes that indicated a contribution of endorphins in male alcoholics.
Women with a particular genetic make-up could therefore be at greater risk of becoming dependent on alcohol. 'Today we estimate the influence of the genes in this disease to be at least 50 per cent,' Ildika Raicz explains. However, she warns against exaggerating the results. 'We can only evaluate how large the influence of the genetic mutations we found really is after carrying out further research.'

Counselling during drug addiction treatment reduces unsafe sexual behaviour

Counselling about sexual behaviour during drug addiction treatment could help reduce unsafe sexual behaviour among people at risk of HIV in Russia, according to a study recently published in the journal Addiction, ANI/New Kerala reports. According to ANI/New Kerala, the researchers focused on "substance-dependent" individuals in Russia because alcohol use is highly pervasive in the country, and it has been linked with risky sexual behaviour.

For the study, Jeffrey Samet -- chief of general internal medicine at Boston University School of Medicine and Boston Medical Center -- and colleagues compared the current method used to reduce unsafe sexual behaviour in standard addiction treatment programmes in the country with the Russian Partnership To Reduce the Epidemic via Engagement in Narcology Treatment, or PREVENT, intervention programme.

People living with or without HIV were randomly assigned either to the PREVENT or standard program. PREVENT sessions took place at a hospital in Russia and involved obtaining HIV test results, discussions of personal risk and the creation of a behavioural change plan. In addition, researchers explained to the PREVENT participants the risk reduction plan to promote safer sex, which includes condom use, sex negotiation skills, development of positive attitudes regarding safer sex, and emphasising the role of alcohol and drugs in impairing decisions. Participants in the standard programme received HIV testing but did not receive counselling. People who tested positive in the standard programme received a 20-minute HIV post-test counselling session that included creating risk reduction goals and a referral to an HIV care program. All participants were given condoms when leaving the hospital, according to ANI/New Kerala.

The researchers contacted the participants by phone for three months and at six months to assess their personal long-term risk reduction goals and plans, ANI/New Kerala reports. The researchers found that after six months, participants in the PREVENT programme had a higher percentage of safer sex, compared with the participants in the standard treatment programme. "Both control and intervention groups had improvements in the percentage of safe[r]-sex occurrences, restraining from unprotected sex and increasing condom use between baseline and the three month follow-up," Samet said, adding, "While the intervention group maintained or improved their safe[r]-sex behaviours at the six month follow-up, the standard addiction treatment group worsened." The researchers noted that the results suggest an HIV intervention program targeting the sexual behaviours of alcohol and drug users is feasible and effective at increasing safer sex
