Rehab News: Limited pocket money may prevent problem drinking

Parents may be able to actively prevent their child from binge drinking by limiting their pocket money, researchers have found.

A recent study by experts at Liverpool John Moores University found that young people who receive less than £10 a week in spending money are less likely to become problem drinkers.

The study, which involved more than 10,000 teenagers, found that nearly 90 per cent had consumed alcohol, while 38 per cent admitted to binge drinking.

However, the research also highlighted that many teenagers buy their own alcohol, suggesting that limiting their pocket money would restrict their ability to purchase alcohol.

Publishing their findings in the journal Substance Abuse Treatment, Prevention and Policy, the researchers revealed that teenagers who were members of youth groups or whose parents bought them alcohol were more likely to drink sensibly.

They suggest that limiting and monitoring pocket money may therefore reduce the chances of binge drinking, as well as promoting participation in sports and social activities.
