Rehab News: Lindsay Lohan 'determined not to be a bad influence'

Pictures of troubled actress Lindsay Lohan have appeared in OK! magazine showing her making a concerted effort to overcome her alcohol addiction.

The 21-year-old star entered a facility a number of weeks ago after being arrested for driving under the influence, but Sarah Ivens, editor-in-chief of OK! magazine, has been impressed by her dedication to treatment.

"She really is taking her treatment very seriously. She is replacing Los Angeles and smoking with yoga and reading. She hasn't looked this good in years," the editor claimed.

Lindsay, who was pictured reading the 164-page Alcoholics Anonymous' Big Book, is reportedly determined not to be a bad influence on her younger sister Aliana.

Ms Ivens claimed: "That's why this time she's determined to sort herself out, because she doesn't want her Ali to grow up and suffer the same things she's suffered."

Sharp rise in those receiving alcohol treatment in Wales

The number of people being treated for alcohol problems in the South Wales Valleys has risen by more than 40 per cent in the past year, according to new figures released by the NHS in Wales.

Last year, 15,415 people were treated for alcohol misuse in the region – up from 10,899 the year before, the Western Mail reports.

Commenting on the figures, Welsh Assembly member Mark Isherwoo said: "Much more needs to be done to help those suffering with drug and alcohol misuse ...

NZ government to improve prison's alcohol treatment programmes

The New Zealand government is to expand its drug and alcohol treatment provision in prisons, it has been revealed.

The move was announced by the outgoing corrections minister Damien O'Connor at the combined Australasian Professional Society on Alcohol and other Drugs and Cutting Edge addiction conference in Auckland, and is a response to figures which show that 89 per cent of serious criminals are under the influence of drugs or alcohol in the lead-up to their offence.

A new treatment facility was opened last month at Rimutaka Prison in Upper Hutt, with another due to be operational by July 2008 at the Spring Hill Prison in Waikato.

As a result, an additional 500 interned addicts will have treatment facilities available to them every year.

A pilot programme is also being set up which will allow health professionals to work at police stations in order to identity those offenders which have substance abuse problems so they can then be referred for treatment.

"Currently there is no national framework or standard for court-ordered AOD (alcohol and other drug) assessments, but work to develop this is nearly complete," Mr O'Connor told Stuff.co.uk.

Around 80 per cent of inmates have been found to have a substance abuse problem in the past, compared with just 13 per cent of the general population.
