The UK and Ireland rights to the alcoholism treatment drug nalmefene have been acquired by Danish pharmaceutical group Lundbeck from Finnish biotech group BioTie.
According to reports, Lundbeck plans to conduct additional Phase III studies with the drug this year before applying for marketing authorisation.
"This significantly facilitates EU-wide regulatory and marketing activities. We remain confident that nalmefene will generate significant revenues to the company in the long term," said BioTie's chief executive Timo Veromaa.
The deal gives Lundbeck the rights for nalmefene everywhere in the world except North America, Mexico, Turkey, and South Korea.
Nalmefene is an opioid receptor antagonist used primarily in the management of alcohol dependence.
It has been found to reduce craving for some alcohol dependent patients.
