Rehab News: Many unaware of alcohol and cancer link

A new poll conducted by the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) has shown that few Britons were aware of the link between cancer and certain lifestyle choices such as excessive alcohol consumption.

A total of 46 per cent of those polled did not understand that there was a link between unhealthy foods and drink and certain forms of cancer.

A separate study by Cancer Research UK recently found that alcohol, obesity, smoking, and overexposure to the sun are known to be lifestyle options that can increase the risk of cancer.

Around 160,000 people die from cancer in the UK each year, and research has shown that many of these could have been prevented by simple lifestyle changes.

Scotland showed that it was most aware of what caused it, whereas those in the north of England showed the highest level of ignorance towards its affecting factors.

Dr Greg Martin, the science and research manager for WCRF said: "It really is a shame that so many people are not aware enough about how they can reduce their cancer risk. The fact that diet, weight and physical activity are closely linked to cancer has been well-known in the science community for many years."

Launch of alcohol treatment service

Lincolnshire Primary Care Trust in partnership with Lincolnshire County Council is launching its new alcohol treatment service to the public as part of a Lincolnshire Alcohol Awareness Week.

The Alcohol Awareness Week will see a county tour of seven of the largest towns, where a stand in the town centre will encourage people to gain information about alcohol, its effects and the new treatment service through leaflets and interactive activities.

As well as this, the service ...

will be launching its own dedicated website: www.lincs2alcohol.co.uk. The website will be aimed at both professionals and those who are seeking help themselves or wish to seek help for a family member. The site will include the AUDIT' tool which measures an individual's level of alcohol use, advises whether this could be problematic and suggests what they should do and where to go for help, as well as pages covering alcohol information, quizzes, what alcohol treatment is, local and national helplines and much more.

The same week will also see the launch of a poster campaign advertising the service and the website across the county in community services such as General Practitioner's (GP) surgeries. The same posters will be used on ad shells in twelve different supermarkets across the county targeting home drinkers' who feel that they are drinking above recommended levels but do not have an alcohol problem.

The service has commissioned hospital liaison workers to be based at Lincoln, Boston and Grantham hospitals who will work with patients who have been admitted to hospital with problems linked to alcohol use. These liaison workers will also be able to refer potential service users for further assessment, treatment and support when they leave hospital.

In addition to this, there will be an entirely new open access to alcohol treatment throughout the county via the alcohol and drug resource sites in Lincoln, Boston and Grantham, as well as through satellite sites and criminal justice routes, a restructured Alcohol Community Treatment Service which will have a massive increase in nursing staff and a Structured Psychosocial Intervention Service. These services will be run by Addaction and Lincolnshire Partnership Foundation Trust.

Money will also be available for commissioning GPs, community pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to provide screenings and interventions on alcohol misuse for their local communities.

Councillor Christine Talbot, Executive Councillor for Secondary Education and Healthier Communities said:

"With 7.1 million adults in the UK now drinking at harmful levels, the amount of clinical abuse through alcohol consumption far exceeds that through drug abuse."

"Alcohol abuse not only affects your own health, but the health of your family, as well as impacting massively on your social life, your work and your relationships."

"The introduction of this crucial new service will not only provide help and support for those with alcohol abuse issues and their families, but also for members of their local community."

Tony McGinty, Assistant Director of Public Health and Partnerships commented:

"We have been working very hard with providers of specialist services to get this exciting new service up and running. This will provide an excellent range of services to local people and help to raise awareness of the often unnoticed creep in the amount of alcohol we are consuming and the affect this may be having on our health."

Individualists More Likely To Be Problem Drinkers

What makes residents of certain states or countries more likely to consume more alcohol? According to a new study in the Journal of Consumer Research, high levels of individualism lead to more problem drinking.

"We looked at the extent to which consumer levels of individualism (vs. collectivism) were related to their beer and problem alcohol consumption," write authors Yinlong Zhang and L.J. Shrum (both University of Texas-San Antonio).

"We found that the higher a region scored on valuing individualism, the greater their beer and alcohol consumption, and this was true even when taking into account the effects of other variables such as income, climate, gender, and religion."

The researchers first used archival data to conduct comparisons of beer and alcohol consumption. They compared countries and compared states within the United States. They found that individualism, on a whole-country basis, could significantly predict alcohol consumption. In the United States, individualism correlated with teen drinking, teen heavy drinking, and adult binge drinking.

The researchers went on to manipulate the cultural orientation of individuals in the study. "We did this by simply asking people to either think and then write about enjoying their own life (independent self-construal) or think and then write about enjoying relationships with family and friends (interdependent selfconstrual)," the authors wrote. "We found that people who were temporarily induced to have an independent self-construal were more receptive to immediate beer consumption than were people who were temporarily induced to have an interdependent self-construal." Study participants did not actually consume beer; they merely indicated whether they felt like it.

The researchers found that people with more interdependent mindsets were less likely to over-consume when they were with peers. "The results suggest that people with collectivistic cultural orientations tend to be more motivated to regulate impulsive consumption tendencies than those with individualistic cultural orientations, which in turn makes them less likely to engage in beer or alcohol consumption," the authors conclude.
