Rehab News: Men more likely to crave alcohol under stress
New research has shown that men are most likely to turn to alcohol when they are under stress, whereas women are more likely to be depressed and anxious when stressed.
The research, carried out by researchers at Yale University, found that men who become upset are more likely to crave alcohol and subsequently develop alcohol dependency problems. The study will be published in a forthcoming issue of the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research.
The researchers carried out the study on 54 (27 men and 27 women) healthy social drinkers. The participants were asked to read three scripts based on various experiences in their lives, such as job losses and relationship breakdowns. One script focused on a stressful event, one on an alcohol-related event and one was neutral.
The patients emotional responses were monitored, including their self-reported cravings for alcohol. The men were most likely to experience alcohol cravings.
Tara Chaplin, associate research scientist at Yale, said Men's tendency to crave alcohol when upset may be a learned behaviour or may be related to known gender differences in reward pathways in the brain. And this tendency may contribute to risk for alcohol-use disorders."
