Rehab News: Over 30s 'the real binge drinkers'

Over-30s are more likely to drink too much than younger people, a survey has suggested.

A YouGov poll found that one third of people between the ages of 30 and 50 had overdone it and ruined a night out because of drink in the last 12 months.

Experts have warned that older people are under the misconception that they can handle their drink and might be exceeding recommended levels.

"You often hear people saying they feel worse after drinking the older they get," said GP Dr Sarah Jarvis. "As you age, the body isn't as good at dealing with alcohol."

As the human body ages it naturally loses water and muscle and gains fat.

This makes it less able to handle alcohol and more susceptible to its short and long-term effects.

Previous campaigns have targeted younger people, partly because of the anti-social behaviour element linked to binge drinking.

While this is less of an issue with older people, the damage to their health could be more serious.
