Rehab News: Primary care settings provide successful alcohol treatment
A study has revealed that alcoholism can successfully be treated in a primary care setting with a combination of brief sessions with a doctor and either the drug naltrexone or specialised alcohol counselling.
The findings are based on a trial of 1,383 patients at 11 clinical sites in the US, all of whom were undergoing treatment for alcohol dependence.
According to one of the principal investigators, Dr Robert Swift, the findings send a clear message that "medical care works".
"We found that just nine 20-minute sessions with a medical professional, in conjunction with naltrexone or intensive counselling, yields good clinical results," he revealed, describing this as "a critical finding".
Clinical psychologist Richard Longabaugh, professor of research in the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour at Brown University, said that the finding that alcoholism can be treated in a primary care setting was "good news".
"This makes confronting this disease a lot simpler and this should make effective treatment available to a much larger number of people who need it," he added.
Home Office figures suggest that 8.2 million people in England drink above the recommended level, and around 1.1 million are estimated to be dependent on alcohol.
