Rehab News: Professor calls for age-based drinking guidelines
Recommended drinking levels should be adjusted to take older drinkers into account, an expert has said.
According to Mary Gilhooly, professor of gerontology at Brunel University and director of the Brunel Institute of Ageing Studies, age affects the body's ability to break down alcohol and should therefore be factored into drinking guidelines to protect consumers' health.
"Middle-aged and older people need to be aware of the impact of ageing on alcohol metabolism. They need to reduce alcohol consumption levels with age," the professor commented.
Current guidelines suggest that women should drink no more than two to three units of alcohol a day, while men should limit themselves to three to four units.
The Department of Health has recently adjusted guidelines for women who are pregnant or trying to conceive, but Professor Gilhooly insists that levels are too high for many older people and that the government should therefore issue age-based drinking guidelines.
A recent report by NHS Scotland warned that the number of people suffering from alcohol-related medical problems will rise to 173,097 a year by 2031 unless current drinking patterns are altered.
