Rehab News: Report, Environmental differences may influence likelihood of alcoholism
A new study may have identified the reason why alcoholism is less prevalent in East Asia.
Scientists at Yale's School of Medicine last year reported that the increased incidence of a particular gene variant among Asians is due to natural selection.
This variant is known to help regulate alcohol metabolism, which can mean that the body is less able to tolerate large amounts of alcohol.
And now the researchers, led by Hui Li, have suggested that the variant is more widespread in specific East Asian populations, the Hmong and Altaic speaking groups.
It is therefore possible, say the scientists, that these populations were historically exposed to a different environment in the course of their evolution.
Although the specific environmental difference has not yet been identified, Kenneth Kidd, professor of genetics, psychiatry and ecology and evolutionary biology, said: "What this finding does is highlight that something important in recent human history has affected the genetic composition of many East Asian populations."
The 2003 World Health Survey reported that the average rate of heavy episodic drinking among the total Chinese population was 3.8 per cent.
