Rehab News: Research, Cannabis and cigarette withdrawal produce similar symptoms

Recent research indicates that withdrawal symptoms from heavy cannabis use can be as bad as those experienced by those who quit smoking cigarettes.

A study at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine found that abstaining from both drugs appear to cause irritability, anger and trouble sleeping.

Although only based on a study of 12 heavy users of marijuana and cigarettes, researchers believe that doctors should take these findings into consideration when treating those who have been heavy cannabis users.

The study, the first controlled comparison of the two withdrawal symptoms according to researchers, also appeared to find that half the participants found it easier to quit both substances at once.

Dr Ryan Vandrey from the Department of Psychiatry at Johns Hopkins said: "Given the general consensus among clinicians that it is harder to quit more than one substance at the same time, these results suggest the need for more research on treatment planning for people who concurrently use more than one drug on a regular basis."

Research published last week suggests that a medicine commonly used to treat bipolar disorder could help treat the withdrawal symptoms of cannabis addicts.
