Rehab News: Research, Parental monitoring can help reduce adolescent drinking

New research has revealed that parental monitoring can help cut down on high-risk drinking in adolescents.

A study at the Center for Substance Abuse Research at the University of Maryland College Park surveyed more than 1,200 students to assess the level of parental supervision they had received while in secondary school.

These interviews were then followed up during the first year of university to determine the correlation between parental monitoring and alcohol consumption.

It was found that more supervision was associated with less high school drinking, which then was correlated with less drinking at university.

In the summary, the researchers said that the move to college "marks a high-risk period for escalation of alcohol consumption".

"Parents and prevention practitioners can benefit from evidence that points to specific parenting practices that might help reduce the risk for heavy drinking," they concluded, adding that young adults should still be allowed an "appropriate" amount of autonomy.

A recent study carried out in New York uncovered evidence that teenagers who were more savvy about the persuasive techniques of advertisements were less likely to drink alcohol.
