Rehab News: Research has impact for alcohol dependents who live rurally

Access to treatment for alcohol dependence is limited in rural and remote areas. A study was recently carried out which assessed the effectiveness of two drug therapies for alcohol dependence − the study evaluated the effect of naltrexone alone, and in combination with sertraline, among Alaska Natives and other Alaskans living in rural settings.

Results suggest that naltrexone is as effective on its own as it is in combination with sertraline.

Since naltrexone was approved in 1994 numerous studies have been carried out to assess its effectiveness. However, almost all these studies were carried out in urban areas. These studies also showed that not everyone benefits from naltrexone. For this reason, the researchers investigated if different medications can be combined with naltrexone to increase its effectiveness.

Results showed that a combination of naltrexone and sertraline was no better than naltrexone alone. However, naltrexone significantly improved abstinence rates compared to placebo.

The researchers believe the findings are important for all individuals with alcohol dependence living in rural or remote areas.

These results will be published in the July issue of Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research.
