Rehab News: Sage proposed as alcohol treatment
Chinese sage could provide a new treatment to help alcoholics overcome their addiction, Italian researchers have said.
The herb, Salvia Miltiorrhiza, has long been used to treat heart conditions, blood diseases and insomnia, according to the National Research Council's institute in Cagliari.
In addition, animal studies have suggested that it interferes with the development of liver fibrosis, in which scar-like fibres form in the liver.
Researcher Giancarlo Colombo told the Italian site ANSA that the Chinese herb helped to reduce alcohol consumption in mice.
In addition, he revealed that it eliminated a "customary spike in drinking seen when mice go back on the bottle after being on the wagon for a while".
Scientists who have been researching the herb's potential hope that it may help alcoholics to reduce their alcohol consumption to a moderate level.
Dr Colombo added: "It's been working brilliantly in mice and we're about to start on our human guinea pigs, once we're sure it's entirely safe."
