Rehab News: Scots alcohol death rate twice that of UK

The rate of alcohol-related deaths in Scotland is rising, it has been revealed.

Figures released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that in 2006 there were 27.3 deaths per 100,000 which had links to alcohol abuse, up from 26.7 the previous year.

What's more, a greater number of people die in Scotland due to alcohol than compared to the UK average - just 13.4 deaths per 100,000 had links to alcohol in the UK in 2006, a slight increase on 12.9 in 2005.

This means that there were 8,758 alcohol-related deaths in 2006, with 1,546 in Scotland.

The most likely to be affected are men aged 35 to 54, the figures show.

"It appears that for certain younger people who've been drinking heavily for most of their lives, the consequences are beginning to show themselves at ever earlier stages," Frank Soodeen, from Alcohol Concern, commented.
