Rehab News: Sharp rise in those receiving alcohol treatment in Wales

The number of people being treated for alcohol problems in the South Wales Valleys has risen by more than 40 per cent in the past year, according to new figures released by the NHS in Wales.

Last year, 15,415 people were treated for alcohol misuse in the region – up from 10,899 the year before, the Western Mail reports.

Commenting on the figures, Welsh Assembly member Mark Isherwoo said: "Much more needs to be done to help those suffering with drug and alcohol misuse problems.

"The lives of vulnerable people across the Valleys are being wrecked by drug and alcohol abuse.

"Drug and alcohol abusers need treatment, training, housing and an introduction to the workplace."

The Welsh Assembly government said alcohol and drug treatment was a priority and an extra £9.6 million has been allocated for such over the next three years.

Abstinence 'best' for recovering alcoholics

Recovering alcoholics who choose to abstain from drinking are less likely to relapse than those following an alternative strategy, researchers have said.

A new study looked at more than 1,700 adults who were in recovery from

target="_self">alcoholism.

Participants were either abstainers; low-risk drinkers who were not deemed to be at risk of relapse; or asymptomatic risk drinkers who consumed more than the recommended guidelines but were not deemed to be alcohol dependent.

Publishing their findings in Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, the scientists reveal that alcoholics who were abstainers at the start of the study (2001/02) were most likely to still be in recovery in 2004/05.

Just 7.3 per cent of abstainers had experienced a recurrence of symptoms associated with alcohol dependence, compared with 27.2 per cent of low-risk drinkers and 51 per cent of asymptomatic risk drinkers.

However, the researchers noted that younger alcoholics were less likely to benefit from abstinence.

Lead author Dr Deborah Dawson, a substance abuse researcher with the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, said: "The biggest surprise was how little abstinence did to improve the prospects for younger alcoholics remaining in remission.

"Youthful abstainers are still at high risk."

New alcohol treatment launches in Canada

A clinic in Vancouver is offering a new form of alcohol treatment, called the Neuroreceptor Repair and Regeneration (NRR) protocol.

The treatment is said to consist of an "innovative and nurturing detoxification" and is based on correcting the neurological aspects of chemical dependency at the source of the problem.

Developed by Vancouver-based Maggie Gold, the detoxification method involves an intravenous infusion of amino acids, vitamins and minerals that are designed to help flush out the chemicals that are largely responsible for relapse.

The treatment, which is administered during a ten-day detoxification course, is "very gentle", said Ms Gold.

"A large number of addicts fear the detoxification process because of how painful it can be. Fortunately, our integrated treatment significantly reduces these unpleasant withdrawal effects," she claimed.

The expert noted that, while many alcohol treatment methods focus on the psychological aspects of recovery from alcoholism, they tend to miss out physical detoxification and brain chemistry.

"Unless the stored metabolites from drug or alcohol intake are completely eliminated and brain function is repaired and regenerated, addictive cravings continue and recovery remains a struggle," she added.
