Rehab News: Spirituality may help recovering alcoholics
US researchers believe that spirituality may help recovering alcoholics and that addicts may benefit from finding a recovery programme that accommodates their beliefs.
A study by experts at the University of Michigan Addiction Research Centre looked at how spirituality changes during recovery from alcohol addiction and whether or not these changes may influence a person's chances of success.
Publishing their findings in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs, the researchers noted that people tend to become more spiritual as they progress through alcohol recovery.
The study, which involved 154 adults diagnosed with alcohol dependence or alcohol abuse, also found that those patients whose spirituality increased were more likely to find a renewed sense of purpose in life.
Their use of alcohol decreased significantly, with 72 per cent of participants not relapsing to heavy drinking.
Lead researcher Dr Elizabeth Robinson, a research assistant professor in the university's psychology department, commented: "While people's actual beliefs don't seem to change during recovery, the extent they have spiritual experiences, and are open to spirituality in their lives, does change."
The study authors stressed that spirituality need not involve believing in any particular interpretation of God, or indeed holding a belief in a God of any kind, and they suggested that including spirituality in alcohol treatment may help recovery.
