Lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) youth are nearly 200 per cent more likely to abuse substances than their heterosexual counterparts, according to a new US study.
Researchers looked at 18 studies carried out between 1994 and 2006 testing the relationship between sexual orientation and teen substance abuse.
The research was led by Michael P. Marshal, assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh's Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic.
Mr Marshal suggested the reason behind these figures is that homosexual youths are more likely to be the victims of discrimination that leads them to turn to taking the substances.
He said: "History shows that when marginalized groups are oppressed and do not have equal opportunities and equal rights, they suffer. Our results show that gay youth are clearly no exception."
The research, supported by the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, found that LGB youth are on average 190 per cent more likely to abuse substances than heterosexual teens, displaying higher rates of cigarette, alcohol and marijuana use, as well as other illegal drugs including cocaine, methamphetamines and injected substances.
Meanwhile, a study published by the Department of Alcohol and Drug programs in California suggests that crystal meth use is 11 times more prevalent among the state's gay and bisexual residents than its overall population.
