Rehab News: Study suggests gene may be involved in alcohol addiction
Previous research has studied the link between the dopamine D2 receptor gene (DRD2) and alcoholism, but a new study has now drawn attention to a neighbouring gene that is thought to also be involved in addictive behaviours.
The gene, ankyrin repeat and kinase domain containing 1 (ANKK1), may help to explain why the existing research on DRD2 has been inconclusive.
Brien Riley, director of the molecular genetics lab at Virginia Commonwealth University, commented: "The study finds strongest evidence of association not in the DRD2 gene, but rather in the neighboring gene, ANKK1.
"This is notable because it suggests that the original evidence pointed to ANKK1 all along."
However, Mr Riley pointed out that the study has not proven ANKK1's role in alcoholism and said that further research is required.
He also noted: "Genes are certainly not sufficient to produce disease by themselves. The individual must be exposed to alcohol which, in common with any chemical encountered in the world, is explicitly environmental."
