Rehab News: Twice as many seek help for alcohol problems

Twice as many people as last year have asked for help with drink problems through the Nottingham Alcohol Problems Advisory Service (Apas).

Apas logged 184 calls from Christmas Eve to New Year's Day - double the previous year's figure of 91, the Nottingham Evening Post reports.

Nick Tegerdine, executive director of Apas, said: "There's more alcohol being consumed, as it is cheaper and stronger and easier to get.

"More people drinking and more alcohol equals more problems."

Between December 27th and New Year's Eve 70 per cent of calls were from people worried about the drinking habits of friends and family members.

Mr Tegerdine said calls included the brother of a man who could not stop vomiting after drinking too much, and a woman seeking advice because her partner became abusive after four pints of beer.

Alcohol addiction court to be piloted in London

The UK's first drug and alcohol court is due to open in London.

It is hoped that the new family court will help parents beat their addictions to drugs and alcohol and in-turn help keep families together.

The London councils of Westminster, Islington and Camden have collaborated to set up the court that will not hear criminal cases but rather fast-track parents to treatment and recovery with support from therapists and social workers.

Alcohol treatment combined with community efforts reduce fatalities

Better access to substance and alcohol abuse treatment can reduce the number of alcohol-related fatal crashes, a study has revealed.

The new study, funded by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), showed that reducing access to alcohol in tandem with substance abuse treatment has a positive impact in reducing fatalities.

"This is the first study to explore the effect of the combined use of increased individually-oriented substance abuse treatment and environmental strategies to reduce alcohol availability," said NIAAA director Ting-Kai Li.

"These results show that concentrated, community-wide interventions can save lives."

The study looked at 12 communities throughout the United States which were awarded grants in 1992 to support the implementation of ten-year programmes aimed at reducing substance abuse and related problems.

The communities developed 15 different kinds of programmes or actions that targeted alcohol abuse, including increasing publicly-funded treatment, establishing awareness campaigns about treatment services, initiating hospital emergency department alcohol screening and referral, conducting responsible beverage training, and enacting ordinances to prohibit public drinking.

The researchers found that communities that undertook concentrated alcohol interventions experienced significant declines in alcohol-related fatal crashes during the ten years of the programme compared with the ten years before the programme.

For example, Kansas City, Milwaukee, San Antonio, Santa Barbara and Vallejo experienced a 22 per cent decline in alcohol-related crashes involving blood alcohol concentrations (BACs) of 0.01 per cent or higher, relative to same-state comparison communities.

"As research further defines the types of community interventions that successfully reduce alcohol-related problems communities can focus on intervention strategies likely to produce desired results," said lead researcher Ralph Hingson, professor at the Boston University School of Public Health and Center to Prevent Alcohol Problems Among Young People.
