Rehab News: US study, Boys more prone to following national drug trends

New research suggests boys are more prone to be affected by national trends when using marijuana than girls.

A study published in the journal Prevention Science says that the risk of boys in the US taking cannabis is affected by a general shift in the popularity of the use of the drug.

Girls, however, remain just as likely to use cannabis during years of high and low national use.

The research is based on information collected from nearly 45,000 17 and 18-year-old US students between 1979 and 2004, comparing the impact of national trends on boys and girls.

Researchers believe that the findings suggest that the more deviance-prone males respond to the social acceptance of marijuana use.

The study's lead author Michelle Little said: "To prevent drug use, we need to drive down social acceptance of marijuana use among all adolescents through a variety of media campaigns and risk-focused prevention programs. We should also combine that with drug use prevention programs targeted for deviance prone male and female teens."

Last month the national director for mental health Professor Louis Appleby said the health establishment has become "complacent" over the dangers of cannabis.
